Retailers missing out on mobile market

75% of leading online stores are closed to tablet shoppers, while 20% have no mobile access

Recent research into the mobile-readiness of the UK's top 100 retail brands has uncovered somewhat surprising results.

Many retailers have not yet adopted mCommerce as part of their business strategy and as a result are missing out on a massive opportunity. They are failing to capitalise on this mass market, despite the increasing trend in mobile shopping. The UK's smartphone usage has already surpassed 50% of the market whilst mobile devices as a whole are making up approx 15% of all online traffic.

As it stands - only about 26% of the most popular web sites have an app suitable for the iPad, less than 20% have an offering for android tablets and only 10% have built a website suitable for tablet browsing.

And it doesn't stop there. 43% of the top retailers have no app for the iPhone and a staggering 63% have no app for Android phones.

Out of the leading online retailers only 57% offer a website that works on mobile.

A recent consumer survey revealed that the main complaint from shoppers was the lack of payment process for apps and mobile sites.

On the basis that shopping is the number one activity performed on tablets in the UK it should provide a clear message to retailers that their customers need and expect them to embrace new technologies.
